Peabody Resources Ltd 1998 Public Statement
Company Progress
In 1990, the greenhouse gas emissions from Peabody Resources Limited Australian operations were about 157,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent global warming potential (CO2 GWP). PRL noted that emissions per unit of production (Bank Cubic Metre Total Movement) and per tonne Run of Mine (ROM) coal had reduced between 1990 and 1995 primarily due to continuous improvement programmes.
PRL has in place a substantial expansion programme between 1990 and 2000 which will see the start up of the new Bengalla Mine. Total material movement will increase by 70% from 47.1 million BCM to 80.2 million BCM and ROM coal production will double from 7.2 million tonnes to 14.4 million tonnes.
With this increase in production in mind, in its cooperative agreement PRL committed to a reduction in per unit emissions for the group of 8 % kg CO2/BCM TM from Energy Use and 15 % kg CO2/t ROM from Energy Use between 1990 and 2000. Total emissions for the group will be held at 257,000 tonnes CO2 GWP in the year 2000. For Ravensworth and Warkworth mines, productivity improvements and individual projects will achieve a further 10 % average reduction in the kg CO2 per BCM from Energy Use by June 2000. The Bengalla mine will be designed and built to be energy efficient to enable a 20 % reduction in the kg CO2 per BCM from Energy Use by June 2003 based on typical mining industry benchmarks.
Emissions Update
Nett Emissions for the current year are 218,541 tonnes CO2 GWP which include fugitive and non-fugitive emissions resulting from our business operations. These emissions are in line with our predictions and show that PRL is on track to meeting its Greenhouse Challenge commitment.
On a per unit of production basis, PRL continued to achieve decreases in greenhouse gases. In 1998, these emissions were 2.11 kg CO2/BCM TM and 13.85 kg CO2/t ROM compared to 2.21 kg CO2/BCM TM and 15.28 kg CO2/t ROM in 1997.
Action Plan Achievements
Savings in the current year from projects and continuous improvement activities amount to 39,542 tonnes CO2 using 1990 as the base year (or 19,869 tonnes CO2 using 1995 as the reference year).
Work is proceeding at the Bengalla Mine in designing energy efficiency into all aspects of the operations.
Some projects have been deferred by from six to eighteen months due to constraints on capital. However, we are confident that the projects will be implemented in sufficient time to have impact within the time frame of this programme.
Forecast Emissions and Savings
PRL estimates that the year 2000 emission levels will be 257,000 tonnes CO2 GWP. Without the actions taken under the Cooperative Agreement, annual emissions at that time would be higher by about 55,000 tonnes CO2 per year (using 1990 as the base year).
Total savings in emissions between 1990 and 2000 are estimated at 361,000 tonnes CO2 GWP.
